Description
The goal of this course is to provide the pharmacist with knowledge of
immunology, the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, indications
for vaccination and implementation and maintenance of a pharmacy-based
immunization program to make immunization delivery a part of your pharmacy
practice.
Each participant must complete and pass the home study module prior to the
start of the formal course. The schedule for Day One of the course will be a
series of lectures covering important aspects of immunization immunology,
epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccines in development,
indications for vaccination, immunization protocol development, emergency
procedures, marketing, vaccine storage and handling and vaccine information
sources and retrieval. The lecture topics for Day Two will consist of record
keeping, vaccine administration techniques and reimbursement. In addition, a
laboratory exercise will be conducted that day for participants to gain
experience with injection techniques. The course will conclude with the
administration of the final written examination.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the pharmacist will be able to:
1) Discuss the principles, scheduling, precautions and contraindications for
vaccination.
2) Describe the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases.
3) Develop a screening technique to identify patients needing immunization.
4) Develop a protocol with a physician in compliance with Wisconsin state
law, including record keeping, emergency procedures and reporting
requirements.
5) Evaluate vaccine information resources.
6) Discuss the various safety procedures required of a pharmacy delivering
immunization services.
7) Utilize appropriate methods of reimbursement for immunization services.
8) Demonstrate the proper storage and handling requirements of vaccines.
9) Demonstrate techniques of vaccine administration for adults.
Course Completion
A continuing education statement will be issued to each participant upon
completion of each of the following requirements:
• Score at least 70% on the home study exam
• Attendance at the live training session
• Successful demonstration of technique for intramuscular and subcutaneous
injection in an adult
• Score at least 70% on the final written exam
• Proof of certification in CPR (basic life support) prior to or within 30
days after completion of the program
Location
The live training program will be held at the University
of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy building (Rennebohm
Hall), 777 Highland Ave, Madison. A map, parking
and hotel information will be mailed
with your meeting materials.
CEU Credit
The
Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin is accredited by the Accreditation Council for
Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This
program offers a total of 1.8 CEUs (18 contact hours). Participants
attending the entire program, scoring at least 70% on the home-study and
final exam, and demonstrating good vaccine administration technique, will be
mailed CE statements within four to six weeks of program completion. ACPE
Universal Program Number: 175-000-08-001-C01. Initial release date: 1/4/08.
Important: Participants must be certified in CPR prior to or within 30 days
after completion of the program.
Registration Deadline
June 20, 2008
Cancellations
A full refund less a $75 administrative fee will be provided
for cancellations received prior to the registration deadline. Full
registration includes all program materials, continental breakfast and
breaks on both days, as well as lunch on day 1. Minimum class size is 15
attendees, maximum class size will be 22 attendees.
