presentations to patients or members of the community. The key components
include slides and a prepared script.

Aging Adults
(W) Aging Parents and Common
Sense: A Practical Guide for You and Your Parents (mid 1990s, 56pp.)
Presented by the Equitable Foundation and Children of Aging Parents
(CAPS). This comprehensive booklet covers a wide variety of issues
including getting involved in your parents’ affairs, their health and
well-being, housing options, financial affairs, legal affairs, making
tough decisions, and the familial caregiver’s own well-being.

Using Your Medications Safely and Wisely (1984)
Presented by Parke-Davis. This program describes the changes in drug
actions in the elderly and questions this population should be asking the
pharmacist. Includes 23 slides and prepared script. Two copies are
available.

Presented by Parke-Davis. This program
describes the pharmacist's role and team approach in long term care

Better Life (1995, 17min, 38 sec)
Presented by the National Council on Patient Information and
Education, the U.S. Administration on Aging, and Glaxo, Inc. Narrated by
Walter Cronkite, this program is targeted at helping older Americans
understand their need to assume responsibility for taking their
medications appropriately to avoid unnecessary return visits to
physicians, additional medications, admissions to hospitals and/or nursing
homes, or worse. Two copies are available.
(P) Working With
the Incontinent (1991)
Sponsored by the Kimberly Clark Corporation. This presentation
covers the physiological reasons for incontinence as well as traditional
solutions for coping with this condition. Includes 13 slides, flipchart
and prepared script.

Katy’s Kids (1991)
Presented by the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation. This presentation
teaches children in the primary grades about medication safety. Includes
slides, video and script for pharmacist use, example letters to
schools/teachers/parents, evaluations, coloring books, bookmarkers,
stickers, and colorful completion certificates. Three copies are
available.

(P) Powders and Pills of Old Time Pharmacies
(1976)
Presented by the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy.
This colorful presentation includes over 30 slides of antique medicines
including excellent displays of prescription bottles and paper labels.
Various images of antique pharmacy paraphernalia can also be seen.

Profession
(P/O)
Compliance and the Role of the Pharmacist (2001)
Presented by the Ohio Pharmacists Association in collaboration with
the Ohio Pharmacists Foundation as part of the A.S.K. Your Pharmacist
program. This comprehensive consumer safety and awareness program focuses
on how taking medications incorrectly can have a tremendous negative
impact on both patient care and the health care system as a whole.
Includes slides, CD-ROM (containing PowerPoint presentation with notes,
news release materials, advertising copy and brochures, and both audio and
video-based public service announcements), sample letters and speaking
guide.
(V) Critical Seconds: Pharmacists. . . Helping to
Improve the Way We Live (1997, 7 min, 40 sec)
Presented by the New York State
Council of Health-System Pharmacists. This program depicts the modern role
of the pharmacist practicing in organized health care systems and centers
around the pharmacist providing pharmaceutical care. In addition, the
video illustrates the manner in which pharmacists interact with other
health care professionals and provides a contemporary look into the
critical role pharmacists play in assisting patients and prescribers in
individualizing drug therapy regimens, dispensing oral and parenteral
medications, and providing vital medication education to healthcare
professionals and patients.

“behind-the-scenes” work of the hospital pharmacist.
(P) Keep Your
Options Open: Choose Pharmacy as Your Career (1994)
Presented by The Iowa Pharmacists Association. This popular
presentation is perfect for those practitioners desiring to interest local
high school youth in the field of pharmacy. This presentation focuses on
the wide array of career opportunities available for pharmacists as well
as the educational preparatory work required to become a pharmacist.
Includes slides, video, script and sample pamphlet.

Gift (1985, 26 min)
Presented by Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals. This program gives a
description of a pharmacist’s duties and responsibilities as well as
explaining the practice of pharmacy and issues surrounding it to the lay
public.
(O) Wisconsin Pharmacists Spot (1999, 30 sec)
Presented by the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation. This spot is a public
relations piece developed for airing on television.
(V) Your Medicine,
Your Pharmacist and You (1992, 16 min, 30 sec)
Presented by APhA and Glaxo, Inc. This program depicts the value of
medicines to Americans’ health, and the role the pharmacist plays as a
key member of the health care team. It also shows the changing role of the
pharmacist as prescription medicines become both more sophisticated and
available for outpatient use. Includes additional presenter’s guide and
pamphlets. Nine copies are available.
Patient Safety

The Power of Words: What You Say Can Make a Difference (2001, 16 min)
Presented by the Institute for the
Advancement of Community Pharmacy. Intended for the frontline pharmacy
practitioner, this video helps pharmacists respond effectively to patient
concerns regarding an actual or potential medication error through the use
of three strikingly realistic vignettes. The video is presented in a
training program format and contains a viewer’s guide and accompanying
continuing education monograph. Two hours of ACPE-approved continuing
education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are available for this
program through November 1, 2003. Contact the PSW office for additional
details.

for Quality and Patient Safety (2001, 10 min, 50 sec)
Presented
by the Institute for the Advancement of Community Pharmacy. This video
highlights interviews with nationally recognized experts who describe the
pro-active patient safety role community pharmacy plays in today’s
complex and changing health care delivery system. These experts, some from
within the profession of pharmacy and some from other high-performance
industries, emphasize that an organization that can learn and utilizes a
systems approach that moves “beyond blame,” represents the current
trend in successful quality improvement efforts.

(V) Go Ahead, Ask
Your Pharmacist (1986, 15min)
Presented by ASHP and Lederle Laboratories. This program reviews
the five main questions patients should ask of their pharmacist when
taking medications. Two copies are available.

Difference Through Community Presentations (1993)
Presented by the Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association. Presents basic
techniques for public speaking and reviews basic presentation skills
pharmacists can use when giving presentations to patient groups or the
general public. Includes video and handbook.
(V) Partners in
Care (1997, 12 min)
Presented by the National Alliance for Caregiving as part of the
“LinkAges: Resources for People caring for Older Relatives” project. This
video is designed to increase the health care professional’s awareness of
the issues and concerns of the family caregiver. It points out that the
family caregiver is an important part of the health care team, and
stresses communication between the healthcare professional and caregiver.
The video emphasizes support for the family caregiver by healthcare
professionals and through community support groups. Includes video,
facilitator’s guide, pamphlets containing tips for family caregivers,
program evaluation forms and case studies.
