Jennings Murphy Award

The Jennings Murphy Award recognizes the best paper published during a calendar year in the Journal of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin. Papers to be considered for this award should represent professional or scholarly work that advances the practice of pharmacy in the State of Wisconsin. Articles that can be considered for the award should fall within one of the following categories: Practice Innovation, Pharmacy Education, Pharmacotherapy, Legislative or Governmental Affairs, or Research. Outstanding papers not included in one of these categories may also be considered. The selected paper will be chosen by a committee comprised of members of the JPSW editorial board and School of Pharmacy faculty. The author(s) of the paper will receive the award at the annual PSW Educational Conference. Past PSW Recipients

Who is Jennings Murphy? Mr. Murphy served as Executive Secretary of the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association from 1934-1959. Prior to that appointment, he served as assistant to Association president, Oscar Rennebohm and also served as Director of WPhA Extension. He was the editor of TheWisconsin Pharmacist, a position he continued to hold after his retirement as Executive Secretary of WPhA. His colleagues credited him with enhancing the quality of the publication during his editorial leadership. In 1947, Murphy was appointed as executive secretary to Governor Oscar Rennebohm and eventually became a member of the State Building Commission.

Jennings Murphy was president of the National Conference of State Pharmaceutical Association Secretaries, The Wisconsin Society of Association Executives, and was the first president of the State Pharmaceutical Editorial Association. He served as editor of the SPEA Pharmaceutical News that appeared in fourteen state pharmacy journals. He was one of the organizers of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy and served as its first secretary.

Mr. Murphy died in 1975 after many years of service to Wisconsin pharmacy.
